Listen

“Too often we wait until there's a crisis … One thing that we are sure of is that we get older every day … But we don't always want to think about what that means.”

— Rita Choula, Episode 18, at 13:55

About Rita

Rita B. Choula is Senior Director of Caregiving at the AARP Public Policy Institute, and a nationally recognized expert on family caregiving, aging and long-term care policy. Her work bridges research and policy to practice, focused on the millions of Americans who provide unpaid care to loved ones.

She is a co-author of AARP's 2026 Valuing the Invaluable report, which estimates the economic value of family caregiving at $1.01 trillion a year. She led the Home Alone Alliance video series for family caregivers who perform complex medical tasks at home.

She serves as Vice Chair of the Board of the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration and is a board member of the National Alliance for Caregiving. Rita also brings personal experience to this work: she cared for her mother for more than a decade.

What you'll learn

  • Who family caregivers really are — not just a woman caring for an older mother, but people of every age, background and career stage, many raising children at the same time
  • What AARP's Valuing the Invaluable 2026 report found — 59 million family caregivers, 49.5 billion hours of unpaid care, worth more than $1 trillion — and why the estimate now counts the complex medical tasks families take on
  • The hidden cost to caregivers themselves: stalled careers, missed retirement savings, and bills and credit card debt that can linger after caregiving ends
  • Why the family member who lives closest isn't always the best person to handle finances or healthcare decisions — and why to talk early, before a crisis
  • Medicaid, not Medicare, is what can pay for long-term care — and where to get help: AARP's caregiving guides, your local Area Agency on Aging, and SHIP counselors for Medicare questions
  • Why "dementia" is an umbrella term, and why caregivers belong on the care team when something doesn't seem right
  • Why taking time for yourself matters for you, not just for the person you care for
